DESLOGE WOMAN ORDERED HELD
AFTER ILLEGAL OPERATION

Following a coroner's inquest into the death of Mrs. Lillie Bannister, age 33, wife of Clarence Bannister of Cantwell, who was removed to the St. John's hospital, St. Louis, on July 7th and who died several days later of peritonitis, as the result of an illegal operation. Mrs. Schindler of Desloge, widow of the Dr. Schindler, deceased, was ordered held on a charge of homicide.

Banner [sic] testified that he had taken his wife to Mrs. Schindler on two previous occasions and had paid her $15 each time.

Mrs. Bannister was returned to Cantwell, and interment was made in the Herrod or I.O.O.F. cemetery at Cantwell.

Besides her husband and friends, Mrs. Bannister leaves nine children to mourn their loss, the youngest being about two years old and the oldest seventeen

DESLOGE WOMAN ARRESTED ON HOMICIDE CHARGE

Mrs. Emma Schindler of Desloge, widow of the late Dr. E. J. Schindler, who died a year or two ago, was arrested Wednesday by Deputy William London on a warrant issued by Prosecuting Attorney Kinder, on a charge of manslaughter in the case of Mrs. Clarence Bannister of Cantwell, 33 years of age, who had died Sunday in St. John's Hospital in St. Louis, of septic poisoning.

On suggestion of the woman's attendant physician at St. John's hospital, a coroner's inquest was held over the remains when it was establisted that Mrs. Bannister had been the victim of an illegal operation. The husband of the deceased woman testified that his wife had this operation at the hands of Mrs. Schindler on June 30th. She was removed from her home to the St. Louis hospital four days prior to her death.

Circuit Attorney Howard Sidener, of St. Louis, forwarded to Mr. Kinder, a copy of the coroner's evidence and verdict, in which Mrs. Schindler was charged with homicide. It was on this information that the warrant for her arrest was issued. She waived preliminary and gave bond in the sum of $2,000 for her appearance, for trial, at the November term of circuit Court.

The remains of Mrs. Bannister were brought to her home in Cantwell Monday. The funeral service was held at the home Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Charles Wilson, of Cantwell, and followed by interment in Herod cemetery. Mrs. Bannister was the second wife of her husband and mother of five children, two by a former marriage. He has four children by his first wife.

The legal papers in the case have all been made out in the name of Mrs. Emma Schindler. Reports have it, however, that she was married a few months ago to a foreigner by the name of George Androf.

CANTWELL WOMAN DIED IN ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL

Mrs. Lillian Banister, wife of Clarence Banister, of Cantwell, Mo., died in St. John's Hospital, St. Louis, last Sunday morning about eight o'clock of septic poisoning. Funeral services were held at the home at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Charles Wilson, with Cantwell Rebekah lodge No. 480 in charge. Interment was in the Herod Cemetery. Mrs. Banister was thirty-three years of age.

As a result of her death, five children, three by her present marriage and two by a former husband, and four step-children, a total of nine little ones, are left without a mother's care.

Mrs. Banister's death is alleged to have resulted from an illegal operation and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch had the following story in their issue Monday afternoon:

"Homicide Charge Against Midwife" -
"A midwife of Desloge, Mo., described as Mrs. Schindler, was charged with homicide at an inquest today in the death of Mrs. Lillian Banister, thirty-two years old, of Cantwell, Mo., who died yesterday at St. John's Hospital of septic poisoning. Mrs. Bannister's husband, Clarence, testified that Mrs. Schindler performed an illegal operation June 30. An order for the midwife's arrest was issued."

Local officers have a warrant for arrest of Mrs. Schindler in their hands, which warrant will have been served by the time The News is in the mail.
