JOHN C. ALEXANDER

             John C. Alexander, clerk of the circuit court and ex-officio recorder of St. Francois County, Mo., was born in that county in 1850, and is a son of Corbin and Lucy (Hunt) Alexander and grandson of William Alexander. Corbin Alexander was born in North Carolina in 1798, was of English descent, and a farmer by occupation. About 1823, he came to St. Francois County, Mo., with his father, who entered 700 acres of land adjoining the town of Farmington. Corbin was married in St. Francois County, but afterward located in Farmington where he carried on farming. He was also for many years engaged in the political affairs of the county, and was elected to the Lower House of the State Legislature, and held that position many years. He was also deputy clerk in the circuit court. He died in 1865. His wife was born in Kentucky in 1812, and died in 1876. She was the mother of four children, John C. being the only one living at the present. He was educated in the home schools, and attended the St. Louis University three terms, and also attended Jones' Commercial College for some time. After leaving school, he began teaming, farming, and speculating in stock and lands. In 1871, he married Miss G. L. Vance, a native of St. Francois County, Mo., born in 1852, and to them were born four children: Nellie P., Clarence L., Martin L., and John Corbin. In 1878 Mr. Alexander was elected circuit court clerk of St. Francois County, and in 1882 was re-elected, and re-elected again in 1886. He is the owner of 261 acres of fine land adjoining the town of Farmington, and is the owner of "Fanchette," a thoroughbred gray mare by imported "Thunderstorm," dam Fanny Moore, by "Lightening." He has also the gray colt, "Luke Alexander" by "Luke Blackburn," dam "Blue Gown" by imported "Bonna Scotland." He has also a fine herd of Jerseys, and has been dealing in fine stock for the past fifteen years. He is a member of the K. of P., of the A.O.U.W., and is a Democrat in politics.
