J. W. YEARGAIN
John Wesley Yeargain, son of the late Andrew Patterson and Lucinda Westover Yeargain,
pioneer citizens of this section of Missouri, was born near Frankclay, Mo., on November
18, 1852, and passed away at his home near Farmington, Mo., at nine o'clock on Thursday
evening, January 2, 1936, aged 83 years, 1 month and 15 days.
On December 9, 1874, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Simms, daughter of the
late James and Frances Walton Simms, also pioneer residents of St. Francois County.
This happy union was blessed with ten children. Mr. and Mrs. Yeargain enjoyed the rare
privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on December 9, 1924, with their
family circle unbroken. On March 19, 1928, a daughter, Mrs. Frances Hughes, passed
away. On December 9, 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Yeargain celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary, surrounded by their nine remaining children, many grandchildren, several
great-grandchildren, other near relatives and friends. May 3, 1935, the devoted
companion of the deceased for more than 60 years, passed on and now after a few short
months he goes to join her in a life of happiness which has no ending.
He is survived by the following children: Carrie (Mrs. I. F.) Robinson of Detroit,
Mich., Lucy (Mrs. Lorenzo) Westover of Farmington, Mrs. Ora Braning of Perryville, Mo.,
Lewis F. and J. P. Yeargain of St. Louis, Harriet (Mrs. P. M.) Fry, Gertrude (Mrs. D. J.)
Laws, Jeff D. and J. C. Yeargain of Farmington. Also surviving are 38 grandchildren,
12 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell of Farmington.
The deceased was a member of the Murphy-Long Memorial Church. He was a member of
Farmington Lodge No. 132, A.F. & A.M., having transferred his membership there from
the Irondale Masonic Lodge, which he joined more than 60 years ago.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Yeargain established their home on a farm near Irondale
where they continued to live until in 1901 when they moved to Farmington. In 1907
they purchased a farm at Valley Forge, near Farmington, on which they spent the rest of
their lives. Mr. Yeargain was a familiar figure in this community for more than 30
years. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him for his industry, integrity and
neighborliness. Truly a wonderful father, a good man and a fine citizen has departed
from among us, but the memory of his unselfish and useful life will long remain as a
cherished heritage.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Murphy-Long Memorial Church, conducted
by Rev. Clarence Burton of Bonne Terre, assisted by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Gibbs.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery. |
