HISTORY OF ELVINS
Part Seven

STORY COMPLETED --
A portion of the history of Elvins, prepared by John L. Sullivan, was inadvertently omitted in the account recently published by the Lead Belt News. The missing section follows:

Lattie Goggins is a drilling contractor with office and supply house located at 124 Short St. Since starting in business, he now has four churn drills and two core drilling machines. A corporation was formed with his son, Lonnie, June 1, 1962. They service well pumps and sell them. Mr. Goggins has a farm at Irondale Route 1, Mo. Mrs. Nelma Russell has been employed in the office for the past two years.

The Claywell service station at 307 Front St. is owned by Jonnie Claywell. He purchased the station from Mr. Wilkerson in 1930. He handles Conoco products.

The McDowell Grocery store, located at 203 E. Main St., is owned by Clyde E. McDowell of Bismarck, Mo. He purchased the store from John Clinton in Feb. 1959. He worked for Mr. Clinton as a meat cutter. The store is operated as a credit and delivery store. Mr. McDowell formerly owned a grocery store in Flat River on Lewis St. for about a year.

Mrs. Hazel Archerd of Elvins has worked in grocery stores for 26 years. She has been with the McLane store in Elvins for 14 years, was with Grisham Grocery Store in Flat River for 12 years. Mrs. Archer's residence is at 625 Camellia Ave., in Elvins.

Elvins received its name in honor of the former owners, Jesse M. and Thelma Elvins. Some think it was first called Elvinsville. In the year 1930, the population ws 2403.

Names of some who have served as councilmen in the city of Elvins: Bill Hubbard, Harry Berryman, Glen Turner, Fred Stange, Harry Holloman, Gus Miller, Bill Smith, Les Copeland, Ed Crouch, August Cook, Marion Polk, Ted Byers, Harry Cannell, Wes Goad, Ralph Gray, Andrew Polk, Charles Middleton, Bob Downing, Clark Head, Grover Cooksey, Adolph Gettinger, Ralph Baker, Vera Asher, Jack Chapman, Leonard Henson, Elmer Clements, Frank Henson, George L. Langdon.

The Boyer service station and appliance store is owned by Pete A. Boyer. He started in business in 1941 at the Phillips' service station in Elvins. In 1950 he moved to 106 Front St. The service station handles Shell Oil products.

Members of the Fire Department, 1962, were: Fire Chief Elmer Clements, Assistant Fire Chief Joe Williams, Dick Polk, Bill Holloway, Gene Bartley, Ray Revelle, Clarence Wilson, Joe Holloway.

Names of some in business years ago in Elvins: William (Bill) Layne, a Mr. Evans, Tom Isbell, Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Whitewall, Carl Morris, Lee Laird, and father, Emil Kline.

City Marshals in Elvins: Joe Page for a short while, William Black, Joe Tinsley, John Hale, Manuel Propst, J. C. Rollins, Henry Harris since 1951.

Names of some who had saloons in Elvins: Mustard Byington, Tom Smith, Mr. Tucker, Miller Bar in Miller Hotel, Wade Hampton, V. Larkin, Brown and Carver, Tom Cain, George Hampton, Flex Dixon, Frank Kenner.

Elvins buildings owned, built by and located at: The Carr Thompson, built in 1906, known as the Knights of Pythias building at 116 Short St.; The I.W. Miller at 301 East Main in 1936, owned by Robert Baker of Elvins; Kenner Building at 202-206 East Main, owned by Emma Aubuchon, Fredericktown, Mo.; Elkhart Building at 108-14 Short St., owned by Elkhart Real Estate Co. of Elvins; The Opera House between 32 Highway and Short St., rear of Carr building, built by Joseph Smith in 1906, being torn down in 1962; the Miller Hotel building at 218 East Main built probably by Harry Miller and sold to Mrs. Don Cameron about 1949; Frank Byington Building built Sept., 1909 at 124 Short St. and owned in 1962 by Lattie Goggins; Security Building or Howell Building at 203 East Main, owned in 1962 by Robert Baker; the Thomas M. Masterson building built in 1908 at 502 East Main St., owned in 1962 by Ralph and Robert Baker of Elvins; the Elkhart building at 223 East Main where Bob Wood had a drug store for several years; The Carr Building known as the Silsby Building between Highway 32 and Short St. on East Main is owned by Toots Ogilvie, Cantwell, Mo.; The Jack Kahn Building at 204 East Main, built by J. N. Richards was sold to Harry Tucker of Flat River who sold to Mr. Kahn in 1943.

George H. Langdon came to Elvins from Bismarck, Mo., in 1903 and worked in a printing plant until 1912, then went into the used furniture business on the east side. In 1937 he moved to the Silsby Building on East Main. In 1946 he moved to the Miller Hotel Building and handled new and used furniture. Mr. Langdon served as mayor, council member of the Elvins school board, and member of the Methodist Church of Elvins. He died in Nov. 1961.

Alvin Baker opened a barber shop in Elvins in 1924 at 211 East Main in the George Howell building, also known as the Security Building. He has a two chair shop.

Carl Lupkey, owner of the IGA (Independent Grocery Association) Store at 200 Gumbo St., Elvins, purchased the store from Lester and Wheeler in 1947. It is the oldest IGA store in the district and state of Missouri. The building is about 37x60 and was built by Clarence Moyer. Mr Lupkey resides at 321 Fite St. in Elvins.

Thos. M. Masterson had a grocery and furniture store at 502 East Main St., built about 1908. In 1915 the building was used temporarily for a church meeting.

The concrete bridge over the river of Flat River was built prior to 1915. An addition was built on to widen the bridge about the year 1947. It was built by L. London and Scott Goad.

The old jail house of Elvins was built by the Elkhart Real Estate Co. of Elvins and is located at the rear of 217-221 East Main or just off Front St. It had four cells and now is used by the Red-E-Gas Co. of Elvins. The new jail is now in the basement of city hall and it has four cells and was built in 1961. The old jail house is now owned by Mr. Ritter of Elvins.

Thomas Gibson, tailor, came to Elvins about the year 1900 and left about 1940. His shop was at 313-312 East Main St. He made custom made men's suits and overcoats.

Elvins population in 1930 was 2403; In 1950 was 1977; and 1818 in 1960, for a loss of 159. It is a fourth class city and was incorporated in 1902.

Elvins is in the 10th Congressional District, the 22nd Senatorial District, 24th Judicial District and in the St. Louis Court of Appeals District.
