Alvin A. Counts, formerly of Desloge, served in the Navy during World War II as a seaman first class.  He was in the demolition outfit - the "frogmen" - and served in the Pacific Ocean.

Part of his experiences in WWII:

"He left Desloge at the age of 17; he had never been away from home.  He traveled the U.S. by train, going in every direction.

"He took his frogman training in Florida and was a destroyer seaman during most of the Pacific war.  He dodged suicidal planes and submarines and had three ships shot out from under him.  He floated for 18 days in the Pacific with 14 other men - they lost one whom they had to bury at sea.

"He saw every island in the Pacific.  He was in Japan soon after the bomb exploded.  He went into Toyoto [sic Tokyo] , where there was a sign reading "Kilroy was here" on a building.

"He was on board the U.S.S. Missouri when the peace treaty was signed and transported Douglas MacArthur to the Philippines during one of his visits.

"His last ship was the H.P. Jones.

"He married Bernice Clark on May 18, 1946, and raised six children."

This information was provided by Bernice Counts, his wife.
