Ernest C. Horton, deceased, served as a PFC in the Army Infantry.  He was a truck driver and telephone operator.

He was stationed at Camp Roberts, California the served overseas in Italy and Austria for 18 months.

His wife writes that her husband told several stories about his service. "He said the water over there couldn't be drunk, so they put their canned drinks in the lake at Italy to keep them cold.  When they wanted something to drink, they dove into 20 feet of water to get them.

"He said the people over there didn't have anything.  The soldiers gave them food to eat.  The children didn't hardly know what candy was."
