Ham Nations Loses Life on Italian Battlefield, reads the headline on the yellowed news story from 1944.   Nations, of Flat River, died in battle on Oct 12, 1944 in Italy.

"Mrs. Hildon Nations of Flat River received a message from the War Department on last Saturday that her husband, First Sgt. Hildon Homer (Ham) Nations, had been killed in action in Italy on Oct 12," the story begins.

"Sgt Nations was born near Yount on Jan 26, 1915, son of the late Homer and Gertrude Radcliffe Nations, and was aged 28 years, 8 months and 16 days.  He came with his parents to Farmington when a small boy where he attended school, graduating with the class of 1933. He later attended Junior College at Flat River.

"On Aug 15, 1942, he was united in marriage with Miss Harriette Mitchell of Flat River, who with their little daughter, Sharon Louise, survives him.  He is also survived by his mother; two brothers, Kermit and Rex, both of whom are also in the service of our country; two sisters, Gertrude (Mrs. L.H.) Keener and Miss Lillian of Farmington."

"Sgt. Nations began his military career as a member of Co. D, Missouri National Guards, 140th infantry.  He received training at Camp Robinson, Ark; San Francisco and San Diego, Calif, and was sent overseas on March 11, 1944.  He first went to North Africa and then to Italy."

"Memorial services were conducted for him at the Christian Church here at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon by Rev. A.C. Johnson which were attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends."
