CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED HERE SATURDAY

James Calvin Abney, aged Civil War Veteran, passed away at his home in Flat River Saturday, December 3, 1932, having reached the advanced age of 86 years, 10 months and 4 days. Rev. Jas. Miller conducted a brief service at the residence Monday afternoon, after which the remains were taken to the church at Goodwater in Washington County, where another service was held. Interment was in the Indian Creek cemetery. Caldwell Bros. were in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Abney was born in Kentucky January 2, 1846. At the outbreak of the Civil War, when 16 years of age, he enlisted with the Union forces, serving three years and four months with Company J First Volunteer Regiment of Kentucky Calvary, under the command of Captain John T. McLain. After the close of the war he returned to Kentucky where he married Miss Jane Bayes, who with three of the seven children born to their union, preceded him in death. The surviving children are: Margaret and Rosanna of Kentucky; Florence and Calvin of Iron County, Mo.

He was later married to Louisa Key and they were the parents of six children, Hunter, Porter, Charles and Newt of Iron County; Mrs. Braska Asher of St. Louis and Mrs. Della Britten of Crawford County, Missouri. His second companion also preceded him in death.

He was married the third time on December 3, 1925, to Mrs. Martha Williams, who survives him. He also leaves the following step-children: Sid and Charles Williams, Mrs. Gertrude House and Mrs. Ollie Grieser of Flat River; Thomas Williams of Iron County; and James Williams of Herculaneum; also one brother, Smith Abney of Kentucky, and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
