COMMUNITY CONDITIONS BRIGHTER --
More Men are Being Put At Work In the Mines.
Old Employees Taken Back Again.

During the past week it seems that the hopeful expectations of the Star have begun to be realized, the mines are again employing the old employees and indications are that every old-employee who can and will do an honest days work will soon have a job.

If there are those who want any kind of honest work they can get, and are willing to render efficient service, the Star should like to have their names. However there is no job on the claim for any man who does not want to work hard and stick to it, the lead plant must be made to pay and everyone must do their part or it will not pay.

Particularly would the Star like to have the names of any property owners who are out of work and are willing and able to work, also men of family. The Star believes that men who own property, men who have families, men who think enough of the community to make it a permanent home, should be looked after by the company first in the matter of holding jobs. We believe that time is here. From what has been said to us the policy of those now in charge is to look out for property owners where it is possible.

The changes of officials, the close down of No. 7 and No. 2 laid out many men. Some of them have gone elsewhere. Some of these men are home owners here. They are holding the same kind of jobs elsewhere, some of them working for this company at other places -- certainly these men are good enough to work here or there is something wrong, not with the men but in the local management. We hope to see these men return. In view of the fact that their worth is proved by their ability to hold positions elsewhere, we believe they will be gladly welcomed back.

There has been much speculation as to what the Board of Directors would do this week as to a change in the local management. There is hardly a possibility of any change in the policy outlined by President Crane in New York several weeks ago, that of operating by departments with substantially no change from the present practice.

The unnecessary prejudice worked up against Messrs. Bilharz and Adami has been unnecessary. The families of both have the reputation of buying everything at home which is more than some other folks practice. Both men are well liked by the residents and the men wherever they have been, and that will be the case here, we are confident.

As regards the interests of Bonne Terre we know that Mr. Bilharz stood firm for continuing the Bonne Terre Electric Plant when it was found possible to close down one of the three and it was proposed to close Bonne Terre. That information did not come from Mr. Bilharz, either.

The rockhouse is being repaired and Mr. J. C. Adami will move his family there in the near future.

The family of W. J. Marshall will move here from Flat River and perhaps others may come or others will be employed as a result of consolidation.

Bonne Terre people we know will be glad to welcome the Marshalls, Mr. Marshall being a son of Judge and Mrs. Marshall and a brother of Dr. Marshall.

Mr. Adami and family will also be welcomed and when they become better acquainted with our people we think all will have a strong liking for Mr. Adami.
