D. C. Brooks of Rivermines was instantly killed Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock at Federal No. 12 shaft of the St. Joseph Lead Company.
According to reliable information given The News, G. Lee Howard, a partner of Brooks, had just gone on top but Brooks had remained underground to clean up some of the spilled rock. There were no eye witnesses to the accident but it is presumed that he became confused as to which side the cage was descending and got in the way of the cage and the cage struck him, crushing his skull.
Mr. Brooks was 57 years of age and had been employed by the company since 1918. His widow and seven children survive. The body was removed to Caldwell Funeral Home but no funeral arrangements had been made at the time of our going to press.
