2003 FARMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION

The school year has ended and 254 Farmington High School seniors are well on their way.

Graduation ceremonies were held Saturday evening with hundreds filling the Farmington Civic Center for commencement. The group of graduates participated in a roughly two-hour ceremony before being whisked away on buses to Project Graduation events throughout the night.

While every graduate received a diploma, the big prize went to Eric McNeill when he was named both Valedictorian and Knight of the Year. McNeill had not only achieved the highest grade point average of the class, but also scored a perfect score on the ACT and SAT, nationally-recognized college prepatory tests. He was voted Knight of the Year based on his being considered an all-around good student by a group of voting high school teachers.

Ben Schnurbusch was named as Salutatorian. He ranked second in GPA for the class. Additionally, the top ten graduates, all based on GPA, were called forward to receive a medal and sash denoting their accomplishments.

This year's speaker was high school social studies teacher Brian Reeves. High School Principal Dr. David Waters said the class of 2003 would likely start a new tradition of choosing a teacher to deliver the commencement talk. For the past several years the talk had fallen to Waters or another administrator. The class of 2002 had forgone a speech in lieu of a video presentation highlighting the group of students' time in high school.

Saturday also saw foreign exchange students being recognized for their contributions to the school. Two students acknowledge the foreign student group and their host families.

Roughly halfway through the evening Board of Education members handed out diplomas as students made the march past the podium. Each student also was handed a candle, which was later lit before the group sang the school song.

For those unable to attend the graduation, the entire evening was broadcast live on Black Knight Television on the local cable system.
