DISASTROUS FIRE AT N. WARD SCHOOL
PREVENTED BY FIRE DEPT.

A fire, which broke out at the North Ward school building, at noon Monday, created considerable excitement among the pupils and the residents of that section of town. Most of the children were out of the building at the time the fire broke out.

The teachers in the building had gathered in the north-west room, upstairs, where Miss Reynolds teaches, to eat their lunch, it being their habit to gather in one of the rooms, each day. It was in this room that the fire made its appearance.

Smoke was first seen coming into the room at the base-board, back of which the flue is located. Soon smoke began to issue from a built in cabinet just above this baseboard. The teachers threw some water on the smoking boards, but immediately called the fire department. Their prompt response to the alarm prevented a disastrous fire which would have resulted in a great loss to the school district. The fire crew have repeated demonstrated that it is practically impossible for a fire to "get away" when [the alarm? page damaged] is given in a reasonable time.

The fire was soon extinguished without much damage. It was found that the flue had cracked at the point where the fire made its way through. The damage to the flue, and to the room where the fire made its appearance, was repaired and the school resumed its work, Wednesday morning.

Mr. Willmore is principal of the North Ward building. He and his corps of teachers handled the situation in an admirable manner. The children were all marshalled out side the school grounds, in order that the coast might be cleared when the fire department should arrive. Very little excitement was manifested among the children. One little fellow, however, wanted to go back into the building. When asked why he wished to go back, he said "I left my coffee cake in there."
