FLAT RIVER JUNIOR COLLEGE - MINERAL AREA COLLEGE

Flat River Junior College was started in 1922 by the Flat River Board of Education to give 2 years of college training to high school graduates.  The first class consisted of 38 students.  They came from throughout the St. Francois Co.

The training of teachers was one of the major reasons for the opening of the college.  Many students attended Flat River Junior College and then transferred to four-year institutions.  As the population grew and more and more students wanted a college education, the college outgrew its campus which was on the Flat River Public School grounds.

In 1967 a new campus was purchased just off highway 67 in Leadington, MO near Flat River.  Fire destroyed the interim building in May 1969.  The new campus was called MINERAL AREA COLLEGE and consisted of a large district including St. Francois Co. and parts of several adjoining counties.  It is supported by taxation, and has the four original buildings plus several additions and over 2000 students.

The first two years of college and an Associate Degree can be obtained in several fields of learning.  The vocational and occupations division include nursing, dental assistants, business training, law enforcement, as well as computer training and other courses.

Within the last few years an arrangement has been  worked out with Central Methodist College to provide 4-year degree programs.
