WALNUT GROVE SCHOOL
CLOSES FOREVER
Published by the LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, St. Francois Co. MO,
"Bismarck News" column, Fri. April 23, 1926.

Friday last marked the closing forever of Walnut Grove public school. This district, recently consolidated with Bismarck High School District, began its career in 1821, when this part of the county was a part of Washington County. The first school building for the district being erected on the farm now owned by W. H. Forbes, then a lovely part of a pioneer wilderness. The building, small in size, was constructed of hewed logs with two windows and a fireplace with stone chimney. The first teacher to conduct a school was Austin Belknap, who opened for business some time in the fall of 1822. This school continued until the year of 1868, when the school was removed to the Mitchell farm now owned by J. H. Tullock and continued until the year of 1887, when the present building was erected on the farm of V. M. Kirkpatrick.
