STORE, SALOON AND DEPOT
BURN AT ELVINS

$20,000 Worth of Property Swept Away
in Midnight Conflagration

A fire broke out in the saloon of Carter Ashlock at Elvins Thursday night which destroyed the saloon and a restaurant, Fleming 's store and the Illinois Southern depot. A cash register from the store and a few things from the saloon was all that was saved. Mr. Fleming carried about $7000 stock, of goods on which he had $5000 insurance. His greatest loss was his account books. Mr. Ashlock carried a small insurance of something like $500.

It is not known whether or not the railroad had any insurance on the depot. The fire started, supposedly from an old stove and had such headway before it was discovered that nothing could be done to save the property. It is estimated that the entire loss is close to $20,000.
