ALIEN MINERS WILL NOT BE EMPLOYED
BY ST. JOE LEAD COMPANY
Published by THE LEAD BELT NEWS,
Flat River, St. Francois Co. MO, Nov. 30, 1917.

Company posts Notices Stating That It
Will Employ None But American Citizens or Those
Who Have First Citizenship Papers.

The St. Joseph Lead Company has decided to retain in its employ only American citizens or those who have taken the necessary steps to become citizens. The following notice was posted this week at the different plants operated by the company:

"On and after December 15, 1917 the St. Joseph Lead Company will employ and retain in its employ only citizens of the United States, and those who have signified their intention of becoming citizens by taking out their first papers." C. J. Adami, General Superintendent.

This action on the part of this company should have a good effect on labor conditions in the Lead Belt. It ought to prevent the importation of vast hordes of undesirable aliens, who when there is a lull in industrial conditions are usually the cause of much bitterness and bad feeling between the companies and their American employees. If this policy had been in effect last July it is a safe bet that the riot which created such havoc here would not have ocurred.
