CHARLES MARLER JAILED
THE BONNE TERRE REGISTER, Bonne Terre, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. May 5, 1905
Charles Marler of Bonne Terre was given the lightest penalty under the law,
in the United States District court at St. Louis, last Tuesday, for making a false
affidavit in a pension application. Marler is forty-five years old and can neither
read nor write. He was arrested some two weeks ago for having applied for a pension
representing himself to be a son of Joseph Marler, who was killed in the Civil War, when
he is really a brother. Marler's ignorance came to his assistance in the trial of the case
and the judge gave him the lowest penalty. He will serve sixty days in jail at
Farmington. When asked in court what kind of a jail St. Francois county had, Marler
replied that it was a pretty good one he guessed as they had "lots of people in
it." -- Lead Belt News.
