FOREIGNER WHO STOLE LIBERTY BONDS
AT ST. FRANCOIS IS ARRESTED

Joe Zaji, an alleged grafter, who has been making periodical visits to some of his fellow countrymen among the foreigners at St. Francois was arrested in East St. Louis this week on a charge of having stolen three fifty dollar Liberty Bonds and a gold watch from Eli Topich and John Bucherech, both of whom are employed by the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Company. Zajai [sic] had the watch on when arrested. Another man was with Zaji at the time he visited at St. Francois. Zaji claims it was his companion who stole the watch and that he bought it from him. He stated that when he bought it he did not known it had been stolen. He denies any knowledge of the bonds. His companion has not yet been arrested, but it is expected that he will be picked up within a few days.

Zaji was located in East St. Louis by Sam Doss, who caused his arrest by St. Louis officers. Doss brought him back to this county and turned him over to the sheriff.
