John Berthold, manager of the Kroger store in Bismarck since the time of its opening in June was held up Tuesday evening about 6:30 when on the way from the store to his boarding house, and robbed of $65. Berthold had closed the store for the night, and had the afternoon receipts from the store, besides some money of his own.
When near his destination, he stepped into an alley to take a short cut home. He was confronted by a man, whom he describes as tall and slender, wearing a dark over-coat and cap. He had his collar turned up and his cap pulled well down over his eyes. In the darkness it was impossible to distinguish his features.
The man spoke to Berthold, telling him to hold up his hands, Berthold did not obey at once. The hold-up man presented a gun and repeated his damand, afterward going through his victim's pockets. He then told Berthold to "march." A search was instituted but the thief had escaped. No clue to his indentity has been obtained.
Berthold was born and reared on a farm east of Bismarck where his parents still reside.
