CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF ELVINS |
Early in 1900 G. B. Gale organized a Sunday School, which was held in Heaton Hall at Elvins, Missouri. This was the beginning of the Christian Church of that community.
In June, 1901, a lot was purchased and in September, 1903, the church was dedicated. Rev. J. B. Luttenberger delivered the dedicatory sermon and Rev. R. M. Talbert offered the dedicatory prayer.
It is believed that none of the charter members are now living. Two of the early members are Mrs. Sarah O'Heeron and Mrs. L. Ritter.
The first baptism in the church was Ada Hampton (now Mrs. J. F. Grissom), and Julia Beard and Walter Davis were the first couple to be married in the church.
Pastors that have served the congregation since the organization of the church are: Revs. J. G. Luttenberger, I. B. Dodson, Grigsby, C. E. Dunkleberger, J. F. Grissom, Haile, G. B. KelRum[?], G. O. Nations, Kinney O'Heeron, M. S. Metzler, E. T. Moore, Philip Welch, Baugh, McGuire, J.[?] C. Horton, James LeGrand, Rev. Mrs. H. P. Hampton and Rev. Rose.
Two nationally prominent ministers were ordained from this church, Rev. Kinney O'Heeron of the First Christian Church of Houston, Texas, and Rev. John LeGrand.
Present membership is 45 and average Sunday School attendance is 30.
