Prompt action on the part of the Elvins fire department, assisted by the Flat River department, averted a destructive fire Tuesday morning at the Kirschman Millinery building in Elvins.

The fire was discovered at eleven o'clock and was caused by a defective flue. The building, known as the Miller building, is a two story brick and the fire was confined to the attic. The flames were under control in ten or fifteen minutes and the damage to the building was estimated between $300 and $400.

Gus Goltz, manager of the Kirschman Millinery Company, said the stock was damaged by water, but no estimate had yet been made. The force, which is about seventy-five persons, mostly women, lost only one half day's work.
