Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Nelms of Desloge have received the following letter concerning the death of their son, Charles E. (Eddie) Nelms M.M. 1/c, U.S. Navy. 7 May 1945 Mr. Charles G. Nelms Dear Mr. Nelms: It is with deep regret and great sympathy that we inform you of the death of your son, Charles, who was killed in action, and we offer our sincerest condolences to you. He was killed instantly at his battle station during action with the enemy on May 4, 1945. On the afternoon of May 5, 1945 funeral services were conducted with all hands present to pay their last respects and highest honors to your son. The funeral services were conducted aboard ship at sea. |
The death of your son was very shocking to those of us who knew him and worked with him and we will miss him greatly. He was close to all his friends and shipmates and this experience has been a stunning blow to all of us who knew and respected him so deeply. His devotion to duty and his courage in the face of danger will always be remembered and will be a source of courage for us. His life and his work was held in high regard by all his friends. All of us who lived and worked with him join in expressing to you our deepest sympathy. In this your loss we pray that God in his mercy will give you strength and courage to aid you in facing the sorrow of the future. Sincerely yours, Mr. and Mrs. Nelms have also received a letter from Eddie's Captain and on Wednesday of last week, a buddy, Leroy Michell, of Omaha, Nebr., visited with the Nelms family, bringing them a detailed story.
