Gene Cole of Farmington was drafted into the
U.S. Army in 1943. Since he was a postal
employee as a civilian he was sent to Army Postal School in Westchester, Penn., for six
weeks. In April of 1944 he was sent to England
with the 17th Base Post Office. He was a part
of Detachment B which had the distinction of
being the first detachment of a base post office to land on the shores of Normandy at
Omaha Beach.
Later in Paris he met his brother, Lorris
Cole, who had just returned from the front with the 94th Infantry Division for R&R. In 1945 he was sent to Wurburg, Germany with the
25th Base Post Office. He was fortunate to be
able to attend Biarritz, France for several months.
He was discharged in February 1946 and
returned to his position at the Farmington Post Office where he served as Assistant
Postmaster for 18 years.
