WENDELL L. GALVAN |

Wendell L. Galvan (deceased) was a Private
First Class with the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry during World War II.
Ms. Lee Galvan Sloan relates the
following:
"Private First Class Wendell L.
Galvan, graduate of Esther High School, served in the U.S. Army Third Infantry during
World War II. He undertook basic training at
camp Walters, Texas.
"He received the Purple Heart and Bronze
Star for front-line duty on Anzio beachhead. He
served as First Machine Gunner and was wounded in action in early May, 1944 - recuperated
enough to go right back to front line duty, where he was critically injured May 30, 1944. He spent the following year in Army Hospitals and
was discharged in 1945.
"He later graduated from Flat River Junior
College and Washington University. He was a
basketball coach and teacher and his last 18 years of teaching was in the Potosi school
System. He passed away March 21, 1982 in John
Cochran Veterans Hospital (St. Louis) at the age of 57.
"At the time of his death, he was
awarded a Presidential Citation."
