George B. Wright of Florida, formerly of Bonne Terre was in the
Army during World War II and recalls being near General Douglas MacArthur's return to the
Philippines.
"I was less than one-quarter mile from Gen. MacArthur when he
set foot back in the Philippines. He didn't go
in until after the sun up so the news people could get good pictures of it. He was around the bend from us. We hit the land at the break of dawn and we really
had to duck but there wasn't any Japs where he went in," Wright said.
Wright was an AAA Automatic Weapons Crewman. He served in Luzon, Philippines and New Guinea. He served a total of one year, seven months and
seven days in foreign service. His highest
grade was T/5.
Wright was awarded three Bronze Stars and also received a Good
Conduct Medal. A Lapel Button was issued and
he was entitled to wear Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Three
Overseas Bars, Bronze Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars.
