Harold Wright served with the Army, Co. F,
141st Infantry, 36th Division European Theatre and relates the following story: "I did my basic training in Texas and went
straight to France after basic training. In
1944 the winter was very bad and to make it even colder I was in the Infantry Unit in the
Vocher Mountains in France. It was so
miserable because of the cold and fighting conditions in snow and sleet. "One of things I remember clearly was the
liberation of a concentration camp in Lansburg, Germany.
Many people may think it was a good feeling to go in and free these people -
but it wasn't. Everywhere we looked there were
dead skin and bones of what were once human, alive people - it was grotesque. "Our unit was one of the units to go into
Italy. This was eleven months before D-Day
Invasion. "The biggest fight I was involved in was
in Kilstile, France just before the Ardennes were broken through. This was fought in mud and snow with little or no
rest. After it was over we cleaned up 600 dead
Germans. "There was not much time between battles
so even though you saw a lot of bloodshed, you just didn't think about it much. As a soldier, you did what you were told. |
