Herman B. Schaefer, now of 326 Spruce in Farmington, was in Co. I, 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Division.  He joined the division on Jan. 20, 1945 in Rickweke, France.

He served in the Colmar Pocket (Rhineland) France.

Schaefer remembers, "On January 26, the day after my 22 birthday, we were overrun by five German tanks.  We suffered 75 per-cent casualties in one day.  What a belated birthday present that was!"
