"The Germans would take our aircraft that
had gone down in the territory and repair them. After
they had them airworthy, they would join the US formations and shoot down our planes. The night before D-Day we painted black and white
stripes on the body of the planes. When we
went up the next day, any planes that did not have black and white stripes were easily
identified and shot down."
