[Submitted by Marijane Farrell, Granddaughter]

Joseph R. Farrell served in the Army 375th Fighter Squadron 3761 Fighter Group England.

 The following is his account:

"My name is Joseph Farrell and I live in Hannibal, Mo.  I was a private in the army and the 375th Fighter Squadron while I was serving in England during WW II.

"The Germans would take our aircraft that had gone down in the territory and repair them.  After they had them airworthy, they would join the US formations and shoot down our planes.  The night before D-Day we painted black and white stripes on the body of the planes.  When we went up the next day, any planes that did not have black and white stripes were easily identified and shot down."

"In 1944 when I was on liberty in New York City, I met my brother on the street.  Neither of us knew the other was in port, so it was a great surprise to us both.  When I was in Long Beach, just before I was discharged, here appeared that same brother.  I didn't know his ship was in port but he knew mine was, so he paid me a surprise visit."
