William C. Iahn of Leadwood, served in the U.S. Army
Headquarter Company 2nd Tank Battalion, in Germany and the Battle of the Bulge. He attained the rank of T5 and was awarded a Bronze
Star during World War II.
"I enlisted in the Army on Jan. 22, 1941
and was supposed to be assigned to a Tank Division. Instead,
after completing Basic Training at Ft. Riley, Kansas, I was assigned to B Troop, 2nd Horse
Cavalry at Ft. Riley, Kansas," Iahn said.
"I spent 18 months in the Horse Cavalry
which it was the oldest Horse Calvary unit still in existence. Our training consisted of riding our mounts from
Arkansas through Mississippi and Louisiana. Each
soldier in our unit was assigned one horse in which we performed complete care that
consisted of breaking, training, grooming and sitting up with our mount if and when they
became sick.
"After my tenure in the Horse Calvary, I
was sent overseas and assigned to Headquarters, 2nd Tank Battalion and I participated
inthe Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Germany. There
were only 47 soldiers in our company to survive our of 150."
"I returned home and was discharged from
the Army on June 29, 1945."
