NEWSPAPERS OF BISMARCK

Through the years, a number of newspapers have been published in Bismarck, 'telling the Bismarck story' and serving the town as it grew and prospered.

Missouri newspaper history lists these as:

"Bismarck Telegram" -- Established 1885. G. Y. Dale, editor and publisher. Continued to about 1888-1890.

"Bismarck Herald" -- Listed in 'Ayers Newspaper Directory' in 1890, with Edward Turner as editor and publisher.

"Bismarck Blade" -- Listed in 'Ayers' in 1891, with S. A. Mason as editor and publisher.

"Bismarck Banner" -- In 'Ayers,' 1905, W. C. Thornton as editor and publisher.

"New Bismarck Sun" -- Shown from 1902 to 1905. Frank Williams, editor, with E. C. White and W. E. Crow publishers.

Bismarck Gazette" -- Founded, January, 1901. George C. Pollard listed as editor and publisher in 1907. George C. Bisplinghoff as editor and publisher in 1909. J. F. Schroeder, editor and publisher, 1914. W. A. Sloan, editor, 1938.

The "Bismarck Gazette" story is further told in the "Missouri Press News" of February, 1948: "The 'Bismarck Gazette' has been sold to Melvin and Carlos Morris of Bunker Hill, Ill." And, in the "Press News" of December, 1948: "The Bismarck Gazette has been taken over by W. A. Sloan. It was operated the past year by Melvin and Carlos Morris."

In 1950, the ownership of the paper is shown as M. C. Stewart, Stewart Printing Co. In 1951, D. R. Stewart is shown as editor. 1953, S. L. Speer of Cobden, Ill., bought the paper from William Stewart. 1967 shows C. L. Ellinghouse as publisher.
