The Stewart Printing Company had its beginning in a small job printing shop operated by Paul Stewart. The complete equipment cost less than three hundred dollars and was housed in the basement of the Methodist Church in Bonne Terre. The firm is now established in a desirable downtown location with large floor space and machinery and equipment valued at several thousand dollars. While job work is still being done the chief work of the company is now the printing and publishing of the Bonne Terre Bulletin.
The first issue of the Bulletin was distributed as a free sheet on July 15, 1932. This initial journalistic effort was a four-page, six by ten inch sheet.
At this stage Jess Stewart joined his brother in the printing office and the working quarters were moved to the Caldwell Building, which is now occupied by the Fair Dress Factory. After several months in this locality the firm purchased the old Ward property adjoining the Caldwell Building and moved into the site which is its present home. The present building has been repaired inside and out and enlarged to more than twice its original size. Machinery and facilities have been added from time to time to enable the firm to take care of the printing needs of the community.
Gradually, as the paper gained popularity and the merchants found it an excellent medium for advertising, the sheet was enlarged. As it continued to grow, a subscription list was readily compiled and application was made for a mailing permit. Free distribution was stopped when the application for a mailing permit was granted early in the year 1934.
The Bonne Terre Bulletin, now in its sixth year of publication, is a full-sized, full-fledged weekly newspaper with a wide circulation. "If it happens in Bonne Terre you'll read it in the Bulletin."
