PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF FARMINGTON
|
In 1912, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the church, Rev. G. W. Harlan wrote a history, from which we quote, in part:
"On the 18th of May, 1832, this church was organized by the Rev. Joseph M. Sadd, assisted by Rev. Thos. Donnell, consisting of seven members, who presented their request for this organization in the following language: 'We, the undersigned, humbly trust that our hearts have been received by the grace of God, and that therefore we have been enabled solemnly to consecrate ourselves and all we possess to Him forever, and feeling disirous to enjoy more fully the sacred worship and ordinances instituted by God; we do mutually agree to associate ourselves together in the capacity of a Church, and adopt the Confession of Faith of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures, and also receive the form of discipline practiced by the same church as the best mode for our regulation and government.'
"To the above names of seven members were subscribed: Elizabeth Cobb, Corinne G. Sadd, Alexander Boyd and Sarah Boyd, who were received by Certificates, also Frederic Woolford, Nancy Woolford and John F. Rudy, who were received by examination.
"Mr. Boyd, who had served as ruling Elder of the Bellevue Church, was elected and installed as the first ruling Elder of this church.
"In March, 1833, Milton P. Cayce and his wife, Susan A. Cayce, were received by letter from the Presbyterian Church of St. Charles, Mo. He having served as ruling Elder of the St. Charles Church, was most cordially welcomed by the little band here and at once elected and installed as their ruling Elder, in which high office he served with remarkable fidelity, zeal, and enthusiasm until his death on April 17, 1888, a period of over 55 years."
In 1840 a frame-structure was built for church purposes on the site now occupied by the Christian Church. In 1886 the old property was sold and the present church erected at a cost of $15,000.00.

It was at this time that Elmwood Seminary was first organized and in 1911, upon the discontinuance of Elmwood Seminary, the present Presbyterian Orphanage was started in the building formerly occupied by the Seminary). Following Rev. Creighton came Revs. S. T. Rufner, J. L. Alsworth, C. E. Hickok, Wanner DuBose, Robert Boyd, L. R. King, J. E. Kerr and Roland Sims, the present pastor.
Seating capacity of the church is placed at over 300. Present membership is 260 and average Sunday School attendance in 200.
