The Bonne Terre "drys" are up in arms as a result of the local option election which is scheduled to be held there June 8. They will seek an injunction against the holding of the election. The injunction petition has already been prepared and will be presented to the court Monday of next week.
The drys allage that the calling of the election is illegal, and according to one of their attorneys, they have little doubt but that they will succeed in preventing the election being held.
While local option, on account of lax enforcement of the law, has not been a "howling" success, so far as Bonne Terre is concerned, citizens residing there claim that notwithstanding the blind tigers, conditions there are much better than when they had the licensed saloons.
It will be a cold old day in August when St. Francois county has another licensed saloon in Bonne Terre or any other place. In 99 cases out of 100 wherever you find a licensed saloon there you will find an organized resistance against enforcement of law.
We have known a good many licensed saloon keepers (perhaps too many for our own good) and we never knew one who was not guilty of violating the dram shop laws. And still these gentry want to again ply their calling in St. Francois county. It is not the actual drinking of intoxicants that has caused the saloon to become outlawed, but it is rottenness, aside from drinking, which was upheld by the saloon element, that has caused men to vote dry.
