MISSISSIPPI
RIVER & BONNE TERRE RAILWAY |
The above is a photo of four men (who we assume are railroad workers) posing in front of caboose number 3 of the Mississippi River and Bonne Terre Railroad (a/k/a M.R.& B.T.). This wonderful photo was contributed to us by William M Kajdzik. The back of the photo contains the following names: "Walter O'Farrell Warren Vandiver". We don't know if this represents the names of two of the men, or if these are 4 different surnames. If anyone can help us out with the identities of these gentlemen, please email us. Below is a close-up of the men to assist in their identification. I did a little research and found that the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre originally ran from Riverside (which I believe was around Herculaneum) south to Doe Run. See image of timetable below (also contributed by Mr. Kajdzik) for stops it made along its route. According to George Drury's Historical Guide, the MR & BT Railroad was owned by the St. Joseph Lead Company. Then, in 1929, the Missouri-Illinois leased the MRBT and the MP [Missouri Pacific] bought 51% of the MI [Missouri-Illinois], which it merged in 1978. Saint Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern was formed in 1874 by merging the St. Louis & Iron Mountain and the Cairo & Fulton. In 1917 the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern and the Missouri Pacific Railway were merged to form the Missouri Pacific Railroad. |
