About 3 o'clock Thursday morning Mr. I. Hendley, who sleeps in the photo studio over Tucker's store, was awakened by a noise made by some person trying to force an entrance into the rear of Tucker's store. He called up Central and the operator succeeded in arousing Mrs. Tucker. Mrs. Tucker immediately telephoned military headquarters at St. Francois. In less than ten minutes two officers, accompanied by several privates, arrived in an automobile. They found the back door of the store open, the lock having been pried loose. The soldiers entered the store but were unable to find any trace of the burglar. Whoever he was he had evidently become alarmed and made his escape before the arrival of the boys in kahki. It is thought that he probably heard Mr. Hendley giving the alarm to the telephone central.
