BISMARCK BREVITIES |
Ed. Register -- From our little town could not come more pleasant news than a report of the Leap Year Ball given by the A.O.U.W. Lodge at this place on Feb. 13th. About fifty couples assembled by nine o'clock, and the grand march was taken up, which ended in a night's enjoyment of the light fantastic. At twelve o'clock supper was announced, and the couples retired to the second floor of A.O.U.W. building, and there enjoyed the many delicacies that had so kindly been supplied by the wives and daughters of the membership. In fact, it was truly, as intended, the grandest occasion of the season. Forty at a time were seated at supper. And here we cannot refrain from giving mention to Mrs. Geo. J. Goeltz, Sr., Mrs. E. T. Stuart, Mrs. Wm. Devine, Mrs. Tobias Heck, Mrs. Savilla Dent, and Mrs. Cynthia Nelson, for their kindness in caring for the supper as they did. The following ladies and gentlement from a distances attended: Messrs. Lopez, Madigan, O'Neal, Tual, Nall, and Gunton, from Ironton; Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas and Miss Kate Downey of Iron Mountain; Robert Smarr of Mineral Point; Will Thomas of Belleview; Messrs. Trauernicht and Steffens and C. B. Reno of Graniteville; Henry Heck, Poplar Bluff; Wm. Towl, Annapolis; Mrs. Poston, St. Louis; John Maloy, Jeff and Thomas Davenport of De Soto.
During the supper hour a very handsome nut cake was voted to Miss Lizzie Sandman of Bismarck, for being the most popular young lady in the room, with Misses Nellie Gherman, Lena Heck and Julia Ryan, all good seconds. Our genial young druggist, Wm. Towl, can explain why Jake Lopez said "I will ground arms," but that does not explain the huge chunk of cake that Will received the following day. Perhaps Miss Lizzie can explain.
Without exception, the ball was a grand success in every way, and the gay couples were yet dancing when the dawn of another day was unfolding the rays of light.
Mr. E. J. Heitzmann, who has for ten years been operator and circuit manager at this place, was transferred to De Soto, and promoted to the highly responsible duties of Train Dispatcher. We are all sorry to see him leave our town, for he was accommodating and genial, but we are proud of his promotion.
Wm. Towl, Jr. and Dr. Norwine have purchased the stock of drugs and patent medicines, fixtures, etc., of H. Bisplinghoff, and this week have spent two days in the city replenishing the stock and adding new lines, which will make the new firm up to date in the drug business.
Wm. Beard, car repairer at this place, was caught between two cars on 13th ult., and sustained fracture of both collar bones and general contusion of the softs parts. He is doing well, as reported by the Company Surgeon, Dr. Norwine.
Dan Hardy, Jr., is now managing the day office, instead of E. J. Heitzmann, while Edward Immer, of Pilot Knob, is on duty at night.
At the last meeting of A.O.U.W. Lodge a vote of thanks was given Editor of the REGISTER for excellent and speedy printing for this ball. -- NIX.
