ELVINS ITEMS:
Miss Effie REECE was the guest of St. Louis friends the greater part of the past week. John DELCOUR, of the Miller Hotel, spent several days of this week in St. Louis on business. Mrs. Jas. NEWKIRK, who has been very sick since Christmas, we are pleased to note, is improving. Miss Sophia CLINTON has been very sick during the latter part of last week, but is able to be up and out again. Misses Pearl and Edna MORRIS of Hazel Run, were the guests of Misses Ruth and Mandy O'HARRO during the past week. Miss Lottie MALLICOAT, of DeSoto, returned to her home Monday after a pleasant visit with Dr. and Mrs. G. W. TIDWELL. Mr. SCHINDLER is erecting a new building on his lot just east of where the old River- side Hotel stood before the fire, which occured about two years ago. The M.W.A. are making preparations to entertain their members with a supper after the installation of officers Tuesday night, January 18. Every member is urged to attend. Mrs. H. L. ADAMS received word from Mrs. DINWIDDIE, formerly of this place, but now at Webb City, that she has been very sick, but the message says she is improving at this time. Sam G. YOUNT has turned his interest in the new Arcade Cafe over to his partner, W. A. DALTON and Mr. DALTON is in full charge. Mr. YOUNT has accepted a good position with the Doe Run Lead Co. Sam G. YOUNT of the Arcade Cafe, held the lucky number in the Auto doings held by the Reece [Reed?] Drug Co., January 1, 1916, and received a five-passenger Ford automobile. The lucky number was 4394. If rumor has it correct, Elvins will soon enjoy a building boom. There are to be several new business and dwelling houses erected at an early date. Also that a moving picture show will be opened in the Dixon saloon building. Mr. and Mrs. Charles FORTNER have been very unfortunate during the past four weeks. Three of their children have had very bad attacks of pneumonia and now Mrs. FORTNER has a severe attack of lagrippe threatening pneumonia. Walter and George BAKER were called to Caledonia last Saturday on account of the serious illness of their father, who is 82 years old. We were unable to learn the cause of the illness and as neither of the brothers have returned we do not know how the suffering father is. The A.O.U.W. will meet in regular session next Saturday night and receive in its membership some eight or ten new members. The lodge of this place visited the Bonne Terre lodge last Monday night and partook of a supper given in honor of the visiting members. A good time was reported by all who attended. W. A. MOUNT returned from Bismarck Tuesday where he had been to attend a big time at the K. of P. hall last Monday night. They held installation of officers and a big supper Monday night. Mr. MOUNT was accompanied home by his two daughters, who had been visiting the past week with their brother, M. J. MOUNT of near Bismarck. Mr. George WEBER of Potosi is the guest of his sister, Mrs. Jos. DIEMER this week. This is Mr. WEBER's first visit to Elvins in 15 years and he was greatly surprised at the many changes that have taken place. At the time of his last visit the only brick building in Elvins was the Silsby brick and the town could not boast of a single concrete walk. The town has also doubled in population. Mrs. W. C. REECE pleasantly entertained the members of the Bay View Beading Club on New Year's afternoon. A feature of the evening was a guessing contest, in which Mrs. MALONE was awarded first prize. Those present were: Mesdames Jas. THOMPSON, A. C. MALONE, G. W. HOWELL, James VANCE, Thos. GIBSON, John DELCOUR, Roy SIZEMORE, E. KLEIN, Wm. VALLE, Carr HARTSHORN, C. G. CARR and G. W. TIDWELL. Those present were: Misses Leah GIESSING, Thelma MERGENTHEIMER, Jena STOPHLET, Virginia WARING, Opal CAGE, Minnie CRITSER, Messrs. Dow NICHOL, Alvin LAYNE and Cecil HUGHES. The only member of the class not present was Homer HUMPHREY. The K. of P. lodge installed the following officers at their regular meeting Wednesday night: L. H. MAURER, C. C.; Wesley HUGHES, V. C.; Thos. J. BUCKNER, Prelate; D. D. THURMAN, M. W.; Emmett LAYNE, M. of F.; Carr HARTSHORN, M. of E.; Jos. DIEMER, K. of R & S.; Floyd HOOVER, I. G.; Meyer NUDELMAN, O. G. They also had work in the second and third ranks. The degree team which has been recently organized made their debut at this meeting and acquitted themselves very creditably.
