HOTEL DE SMITH - ELVINS, MISSOURI |
|
According to an article written by John L. Sullivan in the Lead Belt News on June 2, 1965, this boarding house which was also known as Hotel De Smith was located at the rear of 206 East Main, facing the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre Railroad. The article further indicates that the hotel was built prior to 1908 and was described as being two-story and part three story. The street which this Hotel was located on is now known as Large Street which is on the east side of the tracks in Elvins and runs parallel to the tracks. This hotel was referred to by locals as "Uncle Tom Smith's Hotel". According to the 1900 census, Thomas Smith was listed as a saloon keeper and in 1910 he and his wife Rebecca (nee Leach) Smith ran a boarding house. Below is another view of this same hotel.
