MAN KILLED TUESDAY IN NO. 5 MINE ACCIDENT

A spokesman for the company told the LBN that Daugherty fell from a scaffold from where he was working a distance of approximately 60 feet. The 47 year old man was pronounced dead at the Bonne Terre Hospital. He had been an employee for the company nearly 25 years.
"Dick" as he was known to most people of the area, resided at 623 Camelia Street in Elvins, with his wife, Sharma. He was an active worker with youth in the area having been one of the original members of the group that started the St. Francois County Baseball program for boys. Daugherty had also served area high schools as a basketball referee. He played several years as a catcher for the Pepsi-Cola sponsored softball team which had won several championship titles.
Hershel Lloyd Daugherty of 623 Camelia Street, Elvins,
passed away Tuesday, May 18, 1971, at the St. Joe Mine No. 5 in Elvins. He was born
March 22, 1924, in Elvins, a son of the late Benjamin and Ollie Hunter Daugherty. He
is survived by his wife, Sharma McCrorey Daugherty of Elvins; five brothers, Cole
Daugherty, Arlie Daugherty, and Jesse Daugherty all of Elvins, Raymond Daugherty of
Fredericktown, and Kenneth (Rip) Daugherty of Sullivan; two sisters, Hazel (Mrs. Tom
Welch) and Norma (Mrs. Willard Revelle), both of Elvins; his mother-in-law, Lissie
McCrorey White of Elvins; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Murrill Daugherty.
Mr. Daugherty was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elvins.
Services will be held Friday, May 21, 1971, 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Elvins, with the Rev. Kenneth Huffman and Rev. John Doolittle officiating. Interment will be in the Hamilton Cemetery near Irondale under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Home in Flat River.
Mr. Daugherty will be in state at the Caldwell Funeral Home until 1:00 p.m. on Friday and then will be in state at the First Baptist Church in Elvins until service time.
