DEATH ENDS SUFFERING OF JOE BENHAM

The close of a sad accident came Tuesday to Joseph Marion Benham who died from injuries received at shaft No. 2 on the 25 day of September. Just two months to a day after he was hurt. The cage was lowered on him, crushing him to earth and breaking his spinal column. He was taken to Bonne Terre Hospital where everything possible was done for him but the physicians knew there was no hope for him and young Benham, who was 29 years 2 months 29 days old at the time of his death, soon realized that his case was a hopeless one.

He leaves a wife and four children, the youngest having been born since he was injured. The oldest girl is 8 years of age.

The deceased was reared a Catholic but fell away from his church obligations. After he was hurt he called for his pastor and again made good his claim for Divine mercy and several days before he died was thoroughly resigned and stated to friends that he felt prepared to meet judgement.

The funeral services were held from his home and a great throng gathered at the church. He was a member of the Western Federation of Miners who attended in a body and conducted a service of burial at the grave.

The accident and death was a sad one and touched the heart of the community and his wife and little children have the tender sympathy of all the people.
