MARTIN L. GROVES DIED AFTER NO. 12
MINE WRECK A 28 year old Leadwood man, Martin Luther Groves, died at the Bonne Terre Hospital this morning, as the result of an accident in the Federal No. 12 mine of the St. Joseph Lead Company, early Saturday. Groves, a locomotive engineer, was pulling a train of six loads, at about 12:45 a.m., when the locomotive jumped a track, striking the wall and eventually coming to rest some 39 feet away. He was thrown from the cab of the locomotive. Groves was taken to the Bonne Terre Hospital where his left arm was removed about four inches below the shoulder. It was also found that he suffered numerous fractures of the chest. He died at the hospital at 7:0 a.m., today. The father of three children, young Groves had been employed by the St. Joseph Lead Company for the past four years, and resided with his family in Leadwood. Martin Luther Groves, was born October 30, 1927, the son of John Groves and Pearl Lawson Groves. He died at the Bonne Terre Hospital this morning, April 9 [1956], at the age of 28 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Wample [Wamble]; three children, Brucie and Michele; three brothers, Thomas and Homer Groves of Leadwood and Nay Groves, of Highland, Illinois; and four sisters, Virginia Sutton of St. Louis; Dorothy Mink of Esther; Glenda Ferguson of Indiana and Lestine Crump of Leadwood. The body will be in state at his home in Leadwood. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church in Flat River with the pastor, Rev. Rolla Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Parkview Cemetery, under the direction of the Raymond Caldwell and Son Funeral Home.
