TWO FATAL ACCIDENTS AT MINES THIS WEEK

Otto Ortlof, 40 years old, who had been employed for the past few months as a shoveler for the Doe Run Lead Company, was instantly killed Monday morning at 11:30 o'clock in No. 4 mine.  He was killed by falling back, his body having been badly mangled.  He had worked only 3 or 4 shifts at No. 4, having been at No. 3 until that time.

Ortlof and his fellow employees had been shooting some block holes.  The men had retreated a distance of 100 feet and had taken refuge behind a pillar in order to be out of the danger zone.  They were returning to the heading and were within 30 feet of their place of work when the back let loose, pinning Ortlof beneath its weight.  There is every evidence that death was instantaneous.

The body was taken to the Rinke undertaking establishment, where the inquest was held Monday afternoon.  An undertaker from Belgrade came here late Monday afternoon and took charge of the remains, taking the unfortunate man to his home in that vicinity.

Ortlof, his wife and one child had been making their home on Rivermines Hill until recently.  About three weeks ago, Mrs. Ortlof and the child had gone to a farm near Belgrade.  Mr. Ortlof, who had intended to engage in farming during the coming summer, had intended to join them in the near future.
