300 FOOT FALL IS FATAL TO ELVINS MAN

The many friends of Mr. Sam Wolfe of Elvins were shocked and deeply grieved to hear of his tragic death which occurred last Tuesday when he slipped and fell from the top of No. 3 Mill chat dump, where he was employed.

As Mr. Wolfe was alone at the time of the accident no one was aware of it until the men went to the change room for the shift change. They noted his absence and a search was begun for him which resulted in finding him at the bottom of the dump with his coat pulled over his head. They found him in an unconscious condition and it is thought that the accident happened several hours before finding him.

Mr. Wolfe's duties were watching and tending the chat belt. The chat dump was covered with a heavy coat of ice and was very slick and steep and in some manner he lost his footing at the top of the dump, falling a distance of 300 feet or more. He was immediately rushed to the Bonne Terre Hospital, where everything possible was done to save his life, but without avail, and he passed away at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, the following morning after the accident.

The deceased was one of Elvins' most highly respected citizens and had made his home there for about 25 years. He was a true Christian and devoted much time to his church work, always striving to do good and help others. He was a loving and indulgent husband and father.

Besides his grief-stricken wife he leaves ten children to mourn his passing, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held at the Methodist church last Friday afternoon at two o'clock and was conducted by a pastor of the Church of God from Doe Run, Mo. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in that city and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, demonstrating the love and esteem in which Mr. Wolfe was held. Interment took place at Park View Cemetery.

We extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved family in their sorrow.
