Dave Winston, age 39, and Otto B. Edwards, age 21, were both killed in the mines here Thursday morning and Jesse McLeod was so seriously injured that he died on the train between Flat River and Riverside. His body was brought back to Flat River Thursday night.
Winston was killed at Doe Run Lead Company's shaft No. 4. The Edwards and McLeod accident occurred at the Federal Lead Company's shaft No. 6.
Dave Winston was employed as a machine man. He completed drilling and charging his holes. While waiting for the whistle signal to fire he had gone to sleep, and failed to hear the whistle. He made this explanation to the shift foreman, just previous to his death, which occurred before those who picked him up had time to get his body on top. The men working with him thought he was in the clear when they fired the holes, the explosion of which resulted in the fatal accident.
Mr. Winston had been employed at this shaft for several years. He was married and is survived by his wife and three children. He also is survived by his mother and two brothers, Walter and Calvin, both of Flat River.
Otto Edwards and Jesse McLeod had just reached the bottom of the shaft preparatory to going to work. They were caught beneath a huge mass of rock which fell from the "back" close to the shaft. Edwards was killed instantly. One of McLeod's legs was broken and he was injured internally. He was being removed to St. Johns hospital in St. Louis on the 8:45 train, when his death occurred as stated above. His home is at Doe Run. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry McLeod of Flat River. His wife was with him on the train when he died.
